Stitching nature and culture on a greek island
Come join Jodi Colella on the Aegean Island of Skopelos and treat yourself to a world of art, culture and discovery!
This unique fiber workshop promotes experimentation, sharing of ideas and access to materials and knowledge.
We’ll walk the beaches and surrounding lands in search of inspiration. Back at the studio, you’ll print, stitch, sculpt, dye, weave, embroider and paint to create unique abstractions compelled by Greek culture, with the breathtaking island
vistas as your muse.
Each morning you'll be introduced to a different technique such as abstracted embroidery, sculptural shibori, natural dyed bundles, documenting place, surface design and sculptural form. Together we'll explore process, experimentation and invention while expanding our repertoire of skills. You will accumulate a collection of studies and have the option to concentrate on a personal approach during the final days as you define your vision and forge into new artistic territory. The goal is to provide a safe space to take risks, to encourage self-expression and provide personal discoveries.
Afternoons will be free to work independently in our spectacular outdoor studio, swim and relax, or explore the island and village in search of found objects and images for new artwork. In the evening we'll share our discoveries and learn about local folklore and culture. Group Art discussions will be scheduled for 3 evenings between 6 and 7:30 PM. On alternate evenings, you'll enjoy the camaraderie as you participate in a series of cultural presentations on topics that range from social customs, the changing roles of Greek women, mythology, folk dance and music. Field trips to special sites on the island, organized social activities, group dinners and free time round out a rich and varied program.
Our workshop will begin with an inspiring 2 day visit to Athens, highlighted by tours of the Acropolis, the ancient Agora and the spectacular new Acropolis Museum. We'll explore the streets and markets of this legendary city and dine in lively tavernas. Our Greek sojourn concludes with a visit to the Sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi, famous for its ancient Oracle, magnificent mountain setting and the beauty of its monuments.
Open the doors to new techniques and a new level of creativity in a setting that echoes its ancient Greek origins and simultaneously inspires new directions!
