Haystack’s Open Studio Residency fosters a dynamic exchange of ideas among peers and provides two weeks of studio time and an opportunity to work in a supportive community of makers. The program supports approximately 50 participants—from the craft field and other creative disciplines—who have uninterrupted time to work in six studios (ceramics, fiber, graphics, iron, jewelry, and wood) to develop ideas and experiment in various media. Participants can choose to work in one particular studio or move among them depending on the nature of their work. All of the studios are staffed by technicians who can assist with projects.
I had the privilege of working among Fibers, Graphics, Jewelry, Ceramics and Wood studios. I met people of all disciplines and experiences both emerging as well as some ‘rock stars’ of their fields. There is a unique comradery that happens when you share living, making, dining, hiking - all in a secluded, peaceful slice of the world - and with very special people. It provides you with support to spend time playing and feeling free to try out new skills. Not to mention the dining hall with its amazing chefs providing us with nourishment and epic desserts! This is one rich experience that I will carry with me for quite some time.
